[News release] Annenberg Professor of International Communication J. Michael Waller was a participant at a conference on international broadcasting sponsored by the Hudson Institute and the McCormick Tribune Foundation.
The April 25-27 event brought together former directors of the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, former government officials, current military information operations officers, and other professional communicators to discuss and formulate a strategy for reviving US broadcasting to the rest of the world. S. Enders Wimbush, director of the Center for Future Security Strategies at Hudson, presided at the conference, which took place at the McCormick Tribune Foundation’s elegant conference center at the First Division Museum at Cantigny, the former estate of the late Chicago Tribune owner Robert R. McCormick.
National Public Radio President Kevin Close, who has RFE/RL chief in 1992 drastically cut down the size of the radio operations and oversaw their move to Prague, gave a kickoff presentation.
Significantly, nobody from the Department of State or Broadcasting Board of Governors attended. The conference organizers will make the proceedings available later this year.
